About Yoga

What is Yoga ?

Yoga is a balanced state of the body and mind:

Today everyone knows what is yoga but their understanding is mostly limited to some yoga asanas. According to ancient Bharat YOGA  is a set of spiritual, physical and mental practices that originated in ancient India. Yoga literally means to add. Yoga combines physical exercise, body postures asanas, meditation, breathing techniques and exercise. The word itself means ‘Yoga’ or the single name  of the physical with the spiritual within oneself.

Who Invented Yoga ?

Yoga philosophy was invented by Maharishi Patanjali.

Where Did Yoga Originate ?

This is the oldest science in the world which originated from India. Yoga is extremely important in maintaining physical and mental health. Along with this, Yoga also has a special place in spiritual development.

BHAGAVAD GITA: Lord Krishna Defines Yoga:

Lord Krishna gives another definition of yoga. “Yogah karmasu kaushalam” – karma – action / behaviour / any change in time and space, kaushalam – skill / efficiency / perfect or appropriate behaviour

Perfect action leads to positive health on a physical and mental level. All our actions should be to avoid negative experiences in life, so any behaviour causing negative experience should be avoided. For example, getting angry is harmful for our body and mind, and therefore should be controlled. If stress and anxiety are bad for health then our action should be such that stress and anxiety does not disturb that positive state of mind.

  • Karma Yoga

What Are The 8 Rules Of Yoga ?

  • Yama: Social restraints and moral codes of yoga. The Yoga Sutra describes five different yamas, including ashimsa (non-violence), asteya (non-stealing), satya (truthfulness), aparigraha (non-possessiveness), and brahmacharya (celibacy or fidelity).
  • Niyama: Observances, rules, and guidelines. The Yoga Sutra describes five different niyamas, including saucha (cleanliness), santosha (contentment), tapas (self-discipline), svadhyaya (self-reflection), and ishvarapranidhana (surrender to a higher power).
  • Asana: Yoga postures or poses. This limb emphasizes the importance of caring for the body and developing the discipline to advance spiritual growth.
  • Pranayama: Use of breath. Pranayama consists of breathing techniques that can reduce stress and improve physical and mental health.
  • Pratyahara: During pratyahara, your five sense organs still detect external stimulation, but you don’t allow them to disrupt your state of mind.
  • Dharana: The goal of dharana is to bind your consciousness to one particular object, place, or idea.
  • Dhyana: Meditation.
  • Samadhi: Samadhi is the highest state of consciousness one can achieve through meditation.

HISTORY OF YOGA

CLASSICAL YOGA : 500 BC

Very systematic processes of yoga were written by great Sage Patanjali in 500BC. He wrote Yoga Sutras to explain the process and systematic analysis of practical methods for awakening and expanding the higher faculties of mind, intellect, quality of consciousness. His path of Ashtanga yoga included yamas and niyamas, Asanas, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyan, Samadhi. Yoga Sutras are concisely packed 196 lines in Sanskrit which are divided into 4 chapters.

POST-CLASSICAL YOGA : 500 AD

Shankaracharya – A revolutionary Yoga Master who lived in 800 AD, re-energized the yoga culture. He united various yoga traditions, sorted the ideological differences and gave science of yoga a wider appeal. He wrote commentaries on Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Vedant philosophy, which are wonderful insights in to science of yoga. He founded the tradition of Swami Sannyasa or monks who played a very positive role in society after that.
